COURSE OBJECTIVES/OVERVIEW
Objectives: This course is designed for instrumentalists and electronic musicians who want to explore performing with electronic music (analog or digital/software-based) using historical and contemporary methods in an ensemble performance environment-- incorporating techniques for live sound processing, synthesis or interactive elements into their work. We will work both from repertoire and very up-to-the-minute and recent works/compositions, focusing on individual and ensemble work, improvisation, live electronics, live sound processing etc.
The course aims to improve a student’s understanding of the aesthetic implications of the use of electronic music techniques, alternative controllers and devices, in an ensemble situation. We will also prepare for a planned end-of-semester concert as well as performance opportunities off-campus. The hope is that all students will have some prior experience with electronic music, but it is not a requirement. The ability to read music will also be helpful. In addition, weekly required readings and weekly music listening, and required concert attendance/reviews, students will be responsible for the preparation of any electronic instruments or software they choose to use for our weekly sessions (we will be playing every week.)
Overview: Classes will consist of in-class ensemble work, discussions and critiques, as well as musical examples, demonstrations of specific techniques, and lectures that focus on the functioning of various electronic musical instruments/techniques and the artists who are using them.
Some of the questions are: How do electronic instruments function? What are the meanings of electronic sounds? How can we understand the process of group interaction? How do room acoustics and the performance environment play a role in the overall sound of a performance?
